Hurricane over Denmark

The information on this pages is from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). They don't provide it in english, so I have translated it.

The hurricane on 19991203

On the 3. of december 1999 Denmark was hit by a hurricane with windspeeds up to 38 m/s (Average over 10 minutes). Almost all of the country was hit except for the northern part of Jutland. As you can see on the windspeed picture the south-west was hit the worst and the highest average windspeed was measured to 38 m/s at 18:00 on the island Rømø. In many places the windspeed peaked between 40 m/s and 50 m/s while the hurricane passed.

The hurricane was caused by a depression, which on friday morning moved from Scotland across the North Sea towards Denmark. The hurricane's "eye" hit the coast near Thyborøn at 17:00. From there it moved eastwards with a speed of 50 km/h. The lowest air preasure was measured to 952,4 hPa on the island Anholt at 20:00.

Hurricanes with (average) windspeeds of more than 35 m/s have only been measured three times earlier this century in Denmark. During the cristmas storm on 19021202 and during the floodings on 19671018 and 19811124.

Note that a windspeed of 50 m/s equals 180 km/h or more yhan 110 miles/h. (That was the day to change the gearing of the scooter, find a long straight piece of highway and test the topspeed...
