Paint and Bitubo

It has taken me some time to get around to fit the Bitubo rear chocks. First I waited a bit trying to decide whether I wanted to return them because of the bad paintjob on the springs. After I had decided to keep them, I looked a bit closer at my scooter and decided that I wanted to paint the plates that the shocks bolts on to. You can se on the pictures that they were more than just a bit rusty.

I then considered whether I should strip the scooter completely, so that I could paint the whole frame. I could'nt find the time, so I dicided on just painting the rear frame above the fixating point for the rear shocks.

It took ~3/4 of an hour to strip the rear end. The only difficult part is removing the luggage rack and the fairing. The electrics on the right side is screwed to the helmet compartment by 4 screws and can easily by moved aside. On the left side is the airbox which is fitted with two bolts and is also easy to move aside.

Looking at the exposed frame I could see that it really needs a proper paintjob, but maybe I'll do that before the winter 2001/2002... I used a metal brush on a power drill to remove most of the rust. But it could'nt get into the corners so there I used emeny cloth.

I have loked at different primers to use on the raw iron, but decided to give Hammerite a try. It comes in different colors and are supposed to work directly on iron. I bought it as normal paint but it is also available in a aerosol can. I painted the rear frame twice with approx 1,5 hour between. Then i waited ~3 hour before assembling the scooter again. The paint was still a bit soft, but not stickery. It takes 6 weeks for it to harden completely.

(While checking the validity of the link to Hammerite, I found out that they have a site dedicated to do-it-yourself. But i first saw that afterwards .)

It is not easy to get the fairing back in place, because there is not much room between the rear lamp and the frame. It took a bit of fiddling to get it right. I've not mounted the rear wing and luggage rack yet, because it also need some new paint. I'm thinking about painting it in red or blue (as a contrast to all the silver). The cover over the belt and the front wheel also needs som new paint as the original peel off. You can see the damage on the front wheel on the fourth picture the Sigma Targa page (behind the disc).
