Danish Drivers License

Getting an A on your Danish drivers License can now be even more expensive than when I took the test in 1998.

The rules were changed on 1999/06/01. There is now a minimum number of lessons (each lesson has to be at least 45 minutes). So if you are quick learner you could earlier get by with fewer lessons. I think that I had around 12 including the time on a closed circuit. But the new requirements are:

But if you start the training for a motorcycle licence within two years from you got a car licence you can get by with "only":

And you are no longer allowed to do so as a crash-course in a week. You have to stretch it over at least 14 days.

There are additional demands for the practical lessons. You have to start your practical training in a closed area with simple maneuvers for at least four lessons (Basic gets to now the bike stuff, slalom, braking and riding with a passenger).

But before the test you have to take another course on a closed circuit. This time mostly to practice avoidance maneuvers and hard braking from high speed. You also have to take a small sidecar course, since it is snow included in a standard licence. (It is actually quite fun riding around the circuit on a BMW GS80 with the sidecar high into the air). This should be for at least five lessons.

When you can prove that you have been trough all the required lessons you are ready for the tests. The first test is based on dias. You are showed 25 dias of traffic situations and there are several multiple choice questions to each picture (typical 4). You're allowed to make errors on up to 5 of the picture, but it is not as easy as it sounds since it can be difficult evaluate the pictures the way they want you to think (But I've passed my four theory tests the first time (car, truck, truck with trailer and last but not least motorcycle).

Then there is the real test on a motorcycle in traffic. But that test starts with that they examiner ask you some technical questions about the motorcycle and requirements for it too fulfill the law (I.e the minimum distance between blinkers, how to check for play etc). Basically he can ask about anything that is relevant according to the law and motorcycles ...(You can actually fail the test on not knowing how long the rear mud guard has to be ...). When he is satisfied with you knowledge you are ready for the road test. That is typical a 20 minutes ride around town where you a directed by one-way radio and the examiner is following as a passenger in a car. You are not allowed to use you own scooter/motorcycle for the test since it has to have a special insurance. So you have to rent one from an instructor and typical you rent the bike you have taken the lessons on.

Motorcycle licenses comes in to flavors:

Category Limits Age
A1 Max. 25 KW (34PS) and max. 0,16 KW/kg 18
A2 No limits 21 or see below

If you take the A1 licence you can after two year get an A2 without a new test. So you can get the full licence at the age of 20, if you got the A1 for your 18's birthday.

If you take the A1 licence but becomes 21 year before you have had the licence for two years, you have to take a test to get the A2 licence.

Since this is a scooter site, I will also mention the smaller ones.

Category Limits Age
Moped Max. 30 km/h 16 with a special license
18
Moped (has
number plate)
Max. 45 km/h 18 with a licence for car (B) or motorcycle (A1 or A2)
